Casey Mize lost his no-hitter and the Detroit Tigers lost their lead in a span of only a few minutes in the sixth inning Friday.
The Chicago White Sox scored four in the sixth to beat the Tigers 4-3 in the opener of a three-game series at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The Tigers (20-24) lost ground in the chase for the final American League wild card spot and are now 3 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees (24-21), who swept a doubleheader on Friday.
Mize had not allowed a hit through five innings and got a three-run cushion when the Tigers broke through against White Sox starter Lucas Giolito in the top of the sixth.
But Mize gave up a lead-off walk to Nomar Mazara and then a double to Yolmer Sanchez. Mazara scored on a groundout, and that was it for Mize, who had thrown 76 pitches. Tigers reliever Jose Cisnero, who replaced Mize, hit Tim Anderson with a pitch and then allowed a three-run homer to Eloy Jimenez.
The three runs by the Tigers in the top of the sixth and the four by the White Sox in the bottom of the inning were the only offense all night.
The White Sox (28-16) have beaten the Tigers in all five meetings at Guaranteed Rate Field this summer. They’re currently in first place in the American League Central.
