CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Losing streaks, like winning streaks, take on a life of their own. The Indians have lived on the sunny side of the street when it comes to such things over the last few years. They won 14 straight in 2016 and an AL record 22 in a row in 2017.
Now the lights have gone off and the drones -- literally -- are circling.
The Indians fell for the eighth straight time on Wednesday night, a 3-2 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. For the second straight night they were beaten in walk-off fashion as Javy Baez sent a two-out bases-loaded single into left field to score Ian Happ in the 10th inning.
Kris Bryant started the 10th with a single off Phil Maton to send Ian Happ, the automatic runner, to third. Maton intentionally walked Anthony Rizzo to load the bases. Maton struck out Willson Contreras and Kyle Schwarber. He had Baez down in the count 0-2 with two fastballs when the Cubs shortstop sent a breaking ball into left field to win it.
The Cubs went 4-0 against the Indians this season.
The Indians lost despite some bullpen heroics.
James Karinchak relieved Aaron Civale with runners on second and third and no one out in the seventh. Cameron Maybin reached on a single and went to third on Nico Hoerner’s double over a frozen Oscar Mercado in left field. Karinchak relieved and struck out Happ and Bryant and intentionally walked Anthony Rizzo to load the bases.
Karinchak ended the inning by getting Contreras to ground out to short.
Oliver Perez and Can Quantrill followed with a scoreless inning each.
The Indians, who didn’t score after the fifth inning, had two on and none out in the 10th against right-hander Jason Adam. But Adam forced Tyler Naquin at third on pinch-hitter Mike Freeman’s attempted sacrifice bunt, then retired Cesar Hernandez on a pop out and struck out Francisco Lindor.
Mercado, with the Indians trailing, 2-1, made it a 2-2 game with a leadoff homer off Jon Lester in the fifth. It was his first homer of the year and his first since Sept. 24 of last season against the White Sox.
The game was delayed for seven minutes in the bottom of the fifth as a drone flew over Wrigley Field and eventually landed on the warning track. Lindor and Jose Ramirez jokingly hid behind the umpires and pointed to the drone as they left the field.
Civale had two outs when the drone appeared. When play resumed, Contreras bounced back to the mound to end the inning.
The Indians played for one run in the first inning and that’s exactly what they got.
Lindor opened the game with a walk and Delino DeShields bunted him to second. Ramirez singled to right, but Lindor stopped at third out of respect for Jason Heyward’s arm. In Tuesday’s 6-5 loss, Lindor tried to score from third on a Ramirez fly to right and was thrown out by Heyward.
Lester retired Carlos Santana on a weak pop to shortstop, but threw a wild pitch with Franmil Reyes at the plate as Lindor scored for a 1-0 lead. Lester struck out Reyes to end the inning.
The Cubs made it 1-1 in the second on a bloop single by Heyward. Civale walked Schwarber to start the inning. Baez singled to center and Schwarber went from first to third, showing little regard for DeShields' arm in center. Jose Ramirez, however, did turn the relay around and throw to second to get Baez, who was looking for the extra base.
Heyward scored Schwarber with a soft single to center.
The Cubs scratched out a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Baez reached third base after forcing Contreras at second and continuing to third on a throwing error by second baseman Yu Chang. He scored on an infield single by Cameron Maybin with two out. Lindor backhanded the ball on the outfield grass at short, but lost the handle and just missed forcing Heyward at second for the third out.
Lester entered the game with an 8-3 lifetime record against the Indians. His last win of the season came against them on Aug. 11 at Progressive Field.
Civale pitched six innings, plus two batters, in the seventh for the fifth straight game. He struck out three, walked three and allowed two runs on seven hits.
