The Detroit Tigers had given up 31 runs without scoring, going back to Tuesday's game, before first baseman Jeimer Candelario blasted a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
After Wednesday's historic 19-0 pummeling at Comerica Park, the Tigers were unable to shake the woes Thursday at Busch Stadium, losing, 12-2, to the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 of the doubleheader, and falling to four games under .500.
Rookie left-hander Tarik Skubal gave up six runs on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts. He put four runners on without an out in the third inning before manager Ron Gardenhire sent him to the bench.

The Cardinals' offense produced five home runs in the seven-inning clash.
The Tigers dropped to 2½ games back of the New York Yankees (22-21) for the AL's eighth and final spot in the expanded 16-team postseason. Detroit is sandwiched between the ninth-place Baltimore Orioles and 11th-place Seattle Mariners.

Skubal gave up one run with six strikeouts in six innings during his last start, Saturday against the Minnesota Twins. He worked his change-up well, but this time, 49 of his 67 pitches were fastballs. He tossed nine change-ups, none of which produced strikes swinging.
Right-hander Jordan Zimmermann makes his 2020 debut in Game 2 of the doubleheader. He has been on the 45-day injured list since July 18 due to a right forearm strain.
Ramirez returns
It only took Joe Jimenez 18 pitches (11 fastballs, seven sliders) to give up two two-run homers in the third inning, forcing his exit. Beau Burrows, the 29th player for the doubleheader, limited the damage to just one more run, but he needed 40 pitches to get through 1⅓ innings — allowing five hits.
Those troubles, combined with Skubal's poor start, called for left-hander Nick Ramirez in the bottom of the fifth inning.
He gave up two runs on one hit (a home run to Rangel Ravelo) without any walks in two innings. He hit Matt Carpenter to start the sixth.
Ramirez officially rejoined the Tigers on Wednesday in a series of moves. In 2019, he had a 4.07 ERA in 79⅔ innings with 74 strikeouts.
Through Jimenez's last seven innings across 10 appearances, he has allowed 13 earned runs and six homers. Beginning the year as the closer, he now has a season-high 10.80 ERA.
Flaherty strong
Outside of Candelario's two-run homer in the fourth, Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty was dominant. He gave up two runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
He went five innings but could've gone deeper had it not been for his 23-pitch third and 31-pitch fourth. He tossed a perfect 16-pitch first, striking out Victor Reyes, Jonathan Schoop and Miguel Cabrera swinging.
Flaherty produced 13 strikes swinging and 18 called strikes. His fastball maxed out at 96.2 mph.
Entering Thursday's game, Flaherty had a 2.95 ERA through five games. He was the best pitcher in baseball after last season's All-Star Game, boasting a 7-2 record and 0.91 ERA in 99⅓ innings.
Missed opportunity early
Isaac Paredes and Reyes singled on consecutive at-bats, putting runners on the corners with one out for Schoop.
Schoop worked a 3-2 count but grounded into an inning-ending double play in the top of the third. He was initially called safe at first base by umpire Paul Clemons, but a video review proved otherwise.

Paredes' single snapped a 0-for-23 streak, which dated back to Aug. 29.
The Tigers ended the game with five hits, two coming from Candelario.
