Sebastian Vettel looks set to lose second place in the Hungarian Grand Prix after being unable to provide the required fuel sample at the end of the race.
The Aston Martin driver pushed Esteban Ocon all the way in a thrilling race in Budapest that was blown wide open by a first-lap crash that involved multiple front-runners and then saw polesitter Lewis Hamilton hurt by a strategic error from Mercedes. While Ocon held on to win by 1.8 seconds, Vettel crossed the line second but failed to make it back to the pits.
Vettel stopped on track in the final sector before jogging to parc ferme to celebrate, but it has now transpired that the FIA has been unable to get the required fuel sample out of his car following the checkered flag.
“After the race it was checked on car number 05 whether a 1.0 liter sample of fuel could be taken from the car,” FIA technical delegate Jo Bauer wrote. “It was possible to take only a 0.3 liter sample following the procedures laid out in Article 6.6.4 of the 2021 Formula One Technical Regulations.”
The matter has been referred to the stewards with a hearing taking place almost immediately at the Hungaroring, but the discrepancy is likely to lead to a disqualification.
George Russell also stopped on track immediately after the race ended, with RACER understanding the fuel levels in the Williams cars are also under scrutiny.
