Giants lose hot-hitting Dickerson after bruising his knee with foul ball - San Francisco Chronicle

Giants left fielder Alex Dickerson was forced to leave Monday’s 4-2 victory against the Diamondbacks at Oracle Park after slamming a foul ball off his right knee.

Dickerson was diagnosed with a contusion after he took X-rays, which were negative.

Manager Gabe Kapler said he would check with Dickerson ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Mariners to see if he can play.

Dickerson was batting in the fourth inning when he swung at a sharp Zac Gallen breaking pitch that bore into his hands and hit the ball onto his leg. Dickerson crumpled to the ground then struggled to walk off the pain while head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner examined him.

Darin Ruf took over the at-bat on a 2-2 count and struck out, which was charged to Dickerson. Ruf hit a two-run single in his first official at-bat in the sixth, part of the decisive three-run rally.

Dickerson said via text about three hours after he hurt himself that he was “moving around a little better now.”

“It’s still very sore, but nothing is broken,” he said. “I’ve never fouled a ball off my knee before so I’m not quite sure what I’m in for, but I should know more tomorrow when everything is settled.”

Dickerson has been one of the Giants’ hottest hitters. He entered the game 13-for-27 with four doubles and four homers since Aug. 29, three of the homers in one night at Coors Field.

The Giants can ill-afford to lose Dickerson, the way the Brewers lost Christian Yelich last September when he fractured his kneecap with a foul ball, costing him the rest of the season.

“I certainly had my concerns about Alex,” Kapler said. “He’s such an important piece of our lineup against right-handed pitching, but just generally a very important piece of our roster. I certainly had concerns about what me be. It was certainly great news to come into the clubhouse after the game and hear the X-rays were negative.”

Kapler said he spoke briefly to Dickerson and Groeschner, with the tone of those conversations “positive.”

The Giants already were playing short-handed with third baseman Evan Longoria nursing a sore gluteous muscle. Kapler said Longoria could have played in a pinch Monday.

Shortstop Brandon Crawford missed two games over the weekend with a tight hamstring, but he returned to the lineup Monday and played all nine innings. Kapler said Crawford came through the game fine, even after a long sprint into left field to chase a ball that Ruf eventually caught.
