Knute Rockne, Brian Cashman was not.

On a day the Yankees general manager held a closed-door meeting to pep talk his failing club as it starts to fall out of the playoff picture, the offense went silent again, this time in a 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays in Buffalo on Tuesday night.

Before the game, Cashman gathered his club. He impressed upon them the point manager Aaron Boone has made over and over to the media: That they were good enough to turn around their spiral and win and put themselves in better position for when stars Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and James Paxton come off the injured list later in the month.

Didn’t work.

Though starting pitcher J.A. Happ pitched brilliantly, limiting Toronto to just two runs over 6 1/3 innings, the bats couldn’t come up big when it mattered most. Happ struck out 10 and walked two. Happ’s main blemish came when Jonathan Davis, in his first at-bat of the second, crushed a two-run homer in the second inning.

The Yankees collected just five hits. They were coming off a disastrous loss Monday, in which they blew a four-run lead to lose by six runs. Over the weekend, they lost three of four games to the also-ran Orioles.

The Yankees fell to .500 at 21-21, trending toward becoming the first Bombers club to finish under that mark since 1992.

The Yankees lost their fifth straight game. They have fallen in 15 of their last 20 games. They have just 19 contests remaining.

They started the day in the eighth and final playoff spot. They fell to three games behind the second-place Blue Jays (24-18) in the AL East. Their dreams of winning the division are essentially finished. They began the game behind the first-place Rays by 6 games.

The Yankees had a shot to bust it open in the fifth inning. They had the bases loaded with no outs, thanks to consecutive singles from Luke Voit and Aaron Hicks and a Clint Frazier walk. They would just drive in one run, as Mike Tauchman hit a long sacrifice fly to the left-field corner to score Voit.

The Yankees stranded 10 runners on base and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Gary Sanchez returned to the lineup after a two-game benching and went hitless in four at-bats, striking out once. He’s hitting .125. He did sting a line drive to left field for an out.
