Edmonton had a 2-1 lead and a strong Grade A shots differential but with just under nine minutes left in the game they gave up a soft goal.

The overtime goal, an outside wrister, was also soft, giving CBJ the win.

Overall the Grade A shots were 15 to 8 for Edmonton, with seven 5-alarm shots for the Oil, just five for CBJ. The Columbus goalie Jonas Korpisalo stole this one.

Connor McDavid, 6. He deftly set up Drai with a backhand pass early on for a one-timer, but Drai missed the net. He lost the faceoff and failed to take out Boone Jenner’s stick in front of the net on Sequence of Pain of the first CBJ goal. Took charge of a second period power play, charging around like he was going to pile-drive the puck into the net, and did so by setting up Hyman. His average shift length was 1:11, highest on the team, too high, and one of four Oilers forwards who averaged more than 60 second shifts.

Leon Draisaitl, 5. Not his best game. He made a brilliant backhand pass into the slot to set up Hyman early on. He smoked a harpoon on the CBJ net on a second period power play, but failed to drain it due to a circus save by Korpisalo. He made three d-zone turnovers in a row on one rancid shift to end the second.

Jesse Puljujarvi, 7. He had his best game in a long while. He started off the Virtuous Cycle leading to his own early Grade A shot with a strong forecheck and hit. He charged down the wing for a second Grade A shot in the first. He charged hard to the net and almost put in a pass from Hyman early in the third. He and Holloway tied for the team lead in hits with five each.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 4. He ripped a dangerous short-handed shot on net early in the second. He made a great early pass in Hyman’s second period goal. He allowed some dangerous shots on a CBJ power play early in the third. He got a dangerous shot on net with a minute left in regulation. He failed to contain Kent Johnson on the winning goal, as CBJ had the puck unmolested in the Oil’s zone for 28 seconds. He was at the end of an 82 second shift, so that might explain CBJ’s lengthy possession. He’d been up and down the ice three times and likely should have shifted off 50 seconds into it.

Mattias Janmark, 5. He was OK. He got off a solid shot in the second, made a turnover leading to a chance against early in the third. A few moments later, his pass into the slot almost went in off a CBJ defender.

Klim Kostin, 3. Not one shot. Not one hit.  Not good enough.

Zach Hyman, 7. He almost scored early on off a rebound from Kulak’s outside shot. He allowed the outside shot on the first CBJ goal. He fanned on a high slot shot leading to Gaudreau’s semi-break-in in the second. He executed the Hyman manouver in the second, taking the pass in the slot and backhanding a pass to Draisaitl for a killer shot. A moment later he does what he does best, park himself at the crease edge all Johnny Buycyk and slam home a pass from McDavid. He set up Puljujarvi’s dangerous jam shot in the third.

Ryan McLeod, 5. He was in on a few early Grade A shots, but not much after that.

Warren Foegele, 5. He whipped in a slot pass to Puljujarvi for the game’s first Grade A shot, then got his own Grade A shot on a rebound off Broberg’s outside shot. He was part of the group that allowed a cross-seam pass on Blankenburg’s wicked one-timer.

Dylan Holloway, 7. He was charging around this game, getting much done, including a wicked reverse hit on Peake.

Derek Ryan, 7. Just as CBJ was starting to play well, he charged up ice and launched a brilliant wrister over Korpisalo’s shoulder to tie the game at one. He led the team with five shots in regulation time.

Darnell Nurse, 6. He was out near the point, not covering the net-front on the first CBJ, but that seems to be the Oil’s system off of d-zone face-off losses, not any kind of mistake by Nurse. He screened his goalie on the winning goal.

Cody Ceci, 5. He allowed the cross-seam dish on Blankenburg’s dangerous one-timer early in the second. He made a solid steal of the puck late in the game leading to RNH’s chance.

Philip Broberg, 6. Solid all game. He kept a clean sheet at even strength, not one major mistake on a Grade A shot against.

Evan Bouchard, 3. He made an excellent stretch pass to kick off the sequence leading to Hyman’s early chance but then gave away the puck in the neutral zone, leading to a scary moment. He made another nasty turnover leading to an even scarier moment early in the third, but CBJ missed on the one-timer shot.

Tyson Barrie, 3. He was caught up ice on an odd-man CBJ rush early in the second, but the slot shot fortunately missed the net. He got beat out of the corner on CBJ’s second goal, a key mistake and a costly one.

Brett Kulak, 7. Much more good than bad from Kulak in this one.

Vincent Desharnais, 5. Quiet game from the big man, but nothing much bad happened when he was out there in his 12-plus minutes.

Stuart Skinner, 5. Two massive saves but two goals that had to hurt. CBJ scored first with the Californian, a tipped outside shot, not any fault on Skinner. He came up huge in the second off a Blankenburg power play one-timer. Laine put one off the post early in the third. He failed to thwart Marchenko bulling into the slot on CBJ’s second goal. He was unable to grab hold off the winning shot that flew threw Nurse’s legs and may have deflected in off the big d-man.
