Kroger workers in Houston overwhelmingly favor strike, but talks continue - Houston Chronicle

Kroger workers in Houston voted overwhelmingly last week to authorize union leaders to call a strike, but union officials said Tuesday they will continue negotiations before making the call.

Threat of a strike looms as workers fight with the grocer over hazard pay, health insurance and an expired contract. The strike would affect some 14,000 workers in Harris County and several surrounding counties, said Blake Satcher, a field director for United Food and Commercial Workers Local 455.

In the vote, workers both expressed support for a strike and ceded power to the union’s bargaining committee to issue one as part of the negotiation process, Satcher said. The measure passed by 98 percent among meat counter workers, he said, and by 94 percent among Kroger clerks.
