GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- When a team doesn’t hit or pitch particularly well, it usually loses.
The Indians did exactly that Saturday afternoon in a 7-0 loss to the White Sox at Goodyear Ballpark. Left-hander Scott Moss allowed two runs in the first inning and those were the only runs Chicago needed.
Moss, making his first start of the spring, came back with a scoreless second, but the offense never found itself. They were held to three singles in the seven-inning game.
Hard-throwing Sam Hentges started the third in relief of Moss. The 6-6 lefty allowed three straight one-out singles to Luis Robert, Adam Eaton and Leury Garcia. Hentges retired Andrew Vaughn on a pop to short, but Yermin Mercedes unloaded the bases with a double to center for a 5-0 lead.
The Indians, using the 20-pitch rule, stopped the inning right there.
Right-hander Reynaldo Lopez started and threw two scoreless innings against the Indians. He had one strikeout and retired six straight.
Moss had some tough luck in the first. After Robert opened the game with a single, Eaton reached on a double to left that Eddie Rosario lost in the sun. Robert scored easily. A wild pitch put Eaton on third and he scored on a double play.
“I came into this camp with the mindset of being competitive,” said Moss. “The biggest thing you can do is take an offseason and just run with it and become a better pitcher. My goal this offseason was we got in a house, built a gym and I said I’m going to crush it every single day. That’s what we did.”
The Indians acquired Moss from Cincinnati as part of the Trevor Bauer deal in 2019. He spent last season at the alternate training site at Classic Park in Eastlake. The 6-6 Moss is one of several starters in camp trying to win a spot at the back end of the rotation, competing with Triston McKenzie, Cal Quantrill, Logan Allen and Adam Plutko.
Bryan Shaw made his third appearance of the spring. He had two out in the fifth when he allowed a two-run homer to Garcia. Shaw walked Marco Hernandez to start the inning and moved him to third on two wild pitches. Shaw spent five years in the Indians’ bullpen (2013-17) and is back in camp on a minor-league deal.
Shaw has allowed homers in his last two appearances. Heath Hembree and Kyle Nelson followed Shaw with a scoreless inning each. Hembree, like Shaw, is in camp on a minor-league deal.
The Indians’ three hits belonged to Oscar Mercado, Bo Naylor and Tyler Krieger.
