The Cleveland Cavaliers looked like they had a win in hand on Saturday night in Sacramento. And then Harrison Barnes happened.
After Collin Sexton scored via a goaltending call with 1.7 seconds to go, the Kings had to inbound the ball full-court as they had no timeouts left. Kings guard De’Aaron Fox hit Barnes on the right wing and Barnes was able to get off a clean shot over Cavs forward Dean Wade. The shot went in, sending Cleveland packing with a 100-98 loss. The Cavs are now 17-29 on the season.
Sexton, who led the Cavs with 26 points after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury, appeared to have won the game on his shot. After Fox had an and-one, Sexton took the inbounds pass — the Cavs had no timeouts to advance the ball across half court — and barreled full speed to the opposite end. He got a shot off right at the rim and Kings center Richaun Holmes only blocked it once it hit the backboard. Upon review, it gave the Cavs a 98-87 lead.
Fox led all scorers with 36 points, including 20 in the fourth quarter. Darius Garland added 18 points and 2 assists for the Cavs, while Larry Nance Jr. had 17 points, 9 rebounds and 5 five assists. Cleveland started Brodric Thomas with Jarrett Allen out due to a concussion suffered on Friday night in a loss the Lakers, bumping Nance to center. Off the bench, neither Cedi Osman or Dylan Windler played. Lamar Stevens and Damyean Dotson instead took those minutes.
Up next: The Cavs are off tomorrow before playing the Jazz on Monday in Salt Lake City. The game marks the end of the Cavs’ current four-game, six-game road trip. Tipoff is at 9 p.m. EST.
