Blackhawks crushed by Stars: 'We didn't have it' originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Tuesday was supposed to be a memorable night for the Blackhawks after Patrick Kane was honored for playing in his 1,000th career NHL game. But it was far from that.

The Blackhawks were routed by the Dallas Stars 6-1 in their most lopsided loss of the season to kick off a crucial six-game road trip. And they never really looked like themselves after recording a season-low in shot attempts (36) and scoring chances (12).

"They were good and we didn’t have it tonight," head coach Jeremy Colliton said. "Right from the start, they were sharper, they were skating better."

It was the first time the Blackhawks lost back-to-back games in regulation since losing three in a row to open the season. It was also the second time in as many games they gave up six goals.

The Blackhawks did themselves no favors by allowing 30 scoring chances and 14 high-danger chances, all 14 of which came in the first two periods. The game was well out of reach by the third.

"It hurts losing games like that," Connor Murphy said. "No one likes it. It’s no fun, home or away, any of time of year. It just hurts. Even if the whole game doesn't go well and you want to kind of throw it away and move on as quick as you can, you still want to take an edge with you into the next game."

The Blackhawks knew the month of March was going to be their most difficult stretch of the season. They picked up three out of a possible six points against the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning, which they'll take, but there were certainly some learning moments throughout that series.

The Blackhawks have emphasized over the last several days about developing a killer instinct, and it's something they didn't have from the start on Tuesday. They never even gave themselves a chance to win.

"We all, in that room, would’ve liked to respond better," Colliton said. "We get another chance, so the story isn’t really any different. They’re going to be desperate, they’re trying to pull us back, they've got a bunch of games in hand. If they can make that gap look a little less insurmountable, then those games in hand look a lot better. And we’ve got to be ready."

The Blackhawks will get another crack at the Stars on Thursday and they must respond with a far better effort before things start to spiral out of control, or at least let doubt seep into their psyche.

"I think we just try to get back to what we’re good at," Calvin de Haan said. "We’re not going to go 56-0 in this league. We found a way to keep ourselves in games for most of the season. Maybe this one is just a one-off. I expect us to be better the next game. It’s frustrating, but the sun’s going to rise tomorrow, and I think we can learn from this game."
