How France won this game
Joe Vardon, senior NBA writer: The French recipe for beating the Americans is the same. Ride the hot hand of Fournier, watch Gobert dominate inside, and step aside while Team USA crumbles down the stretch.
The Americans blew two nine-point leads, a 10-point lead, and an eight-point lead in this game. That is some serious throw up, and we have seen it in consecutive losses to France. Durant and Damian Lillard were both ineffective, too, which apparently the Americans cannot survive.
What Team USA has to improve
Vardon: Durant and Lillard were a combined 7 of 22. So, again, they’re going to have to play better. Coach Gregg Popovich will need to tighten rotations, but part of that is having to rely on three players who flew across an ocean after a grueling Finals, arriving in Tokyo on Saturday night. One of those players, Holiday, was fantastic. Khris Middleton and Devin Booker didn’t have much to give.
How concerning is this loss?
Vardon: Ha, seriously? The Americans are one loss away from not advancing out of pool play. And if they play like they did down the stretch of this game against the Czech Republic on Saturday, they absolutely could lose. I’ve been writing and saying it for weeks, and now it couldn’t be more clear: This team is in trouble.
