MIAMI — Tropical Storm Elsa has moved north. But the Dodgers are still taking on water.

For the third consecutive game, the Miami Marlins rallied against the Dodgers’ bullpen, breaking ties with runs in the eighth and ninth innings and walking off the Dodgers for a second consecutive night, 9-6, Wednesday at Loan Depot Park.

The Dodgers have lost three consecutive games to the Marlins (12 games under .500 when the Dodgers arrived in Miami). The decisive runs in each game scored in the eighth inning or later.

Wednesday’s eighth-inning rally against Joe Kelly and Kenley Jansen featured the South Beach mix that has dogged the Dodgers in this series – an error (the third catcher’s interference call against Austin Barnes in his past three starts) and a stolen base (the Marlins’ seventh in eight attempts in this series) set up the two-out, go-ahead RBI single by Jesus Sanchez.

In the ninth, Edwin Uceta gave up a three-run home run to Jesus Aguilar to end it, the Marlins’ fourth home run off Dodgers’ pitching Wednesday.

“I just think that they’re doing a great job of capitalizing on every mistake we make. And we’re paying the price for it,” third baseman Justin Turner said.

“It doesn’t matter what anything says on any paper, you’ve still got to show up and do all the little things right. Like I said, we’re not doing all the little things right now and it seems like we’re paying for every mistake we make.”

There have been many on which the Marlins could pounce. The Dodgers have made five errors in the three games, allowed the five home runs and seven stolen bases and left 30 runners on base by going 5 for 25 with runners in scoring position.

“We’ve just got to be better across the board – defensively, taking good at-bats when we need to situationally,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “Those guys over there, they’ve played some good baseball, aggressive baseball. They’ve made the plays that they’ve needed to make and they’ve made pitches when they needed to.

“It’s a good club over there. They can really pitch. They’ve got some talent over there and they’ve put it on us.”

For the eighth time this season, the Dodgers designated Wednesday a “bullpen game,” their incredible shrinking starting rotation barely containing enough available pitchers to qualify for an HOV lane.

They won five of the first seven games handled by ‘Johnny Wholestaff.’ But this time Roberts had depleted his options by using six relievers in Tuesday’s extra-innings loss – two days after using eight in a Fourth of July bullpen extravaganza.

“It’s not ideal, certainly,” Roberts understated.

One night after making his MLB debut, Jake Reed made his first MLB start as the Dodgers’ opener and was followed by Mitch White, freshly activated from the taxi squad. Reed and White each gave up a solo home run in the first and second innings.

The Marlins were also employing the bullpen strategy Wednesday. But Marlins manager Don Mattingly took a while to put the bullpen in the bullpen game. He stuck with opener Ross Detwiler deep into a third inning, even as the Dodgers got a leadoff home run from AJ Pollock and five consecutive two-out hits – a Mookie Betts home run, singles by Albert Pujols and Max Muncy and a three-run home run by Turner.

Roberts opted to put his saddle on White, who gave him four innings – qualifying White as ‘Employee of the Week’ among the relief crew.

But the Marlins chipped away at the lead, getting an RBI double by Aguilar in the bottom of the third and an unearned run in the fifth when Gavin Lux committed his seventh error in 52 games at shortstop. It was one of 10 errors by the Dodgers on this road trip.

When Phil Bickford took over in the sixth, he gave up Garrett Cooper’s second home run of the game, tying it at 5-5.

It was the first time in the Dodgers’ eight planned bullpen games that their relief relay had allowed more than three runs.

The Marlins broke the tie in the eighth. Zach McKinstry re-tied it with a solo home run in the top of the ninth, but the Marlins rallied again in the bottom of the ninth, walking off with the win on Aguilar’s two-out blow.
