The Buccaneers have finally found out that Rob Gronkowski is not coming back. This shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise.
The Buccaneers are one of those teams where losing one player might not be the end of the world. Having so much talent and the greatest quarterback in the history of the NFL makes it so that losing one player isn’t going to kill the season, but Hall of Fame talent can be hard to come by.
Now, it looks like the Buccaneers are going to need to get busy on the free agent tight end market.
After months of sitting on the fence and leaving the fans to wonder what was going to happen, Rob Gronkowski has finally announced his retirement from the NFL.
This shouldn’t come as a major surprise to anyone. Gronk would’ve been back by this point if he actually wanted to play. Acting like it was a sure thing that he would return was a bit too optimistic for the situation.
Guys that want to play in the NFL don’t have to sit, wait, and think. They don’t have to spend months figuring out what they want to do.
It makes perfect sense for Gronk. A year like the one that he just had with injuries has a way of making guys wonder why they stay in the game longer than they need to.
The Bucs may love the connection between Brady and Gronk and what they bring as a matchup nightmare to this offense, but it is officially time to start looking for a new piece to pair with Cameron Brate at the top.
This is going to be a hard player to overcome, especially when considering how great he is relative to the rest of his competition at this stage of his career, but the Bucs will still find a way to persevere. It did just get that much harder, though.
