PITTSBURGH -- There wasn’t a lot of action for the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline, and there wasn’t a lot of action in the game they played just 60 minutes after the deadline expired.
The Tigers made only one trade on Tuesday afternoon and managed just one run in the nightcap, losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 at PNC Park.
The Tigers (47-60) and Pirates (48-58) wrap up their brief series on Wednesday.
Tigers starter Matt Manning overcame some tough early inning to pitch through the six, retiring his final eight batters.
The Pirates scored three in the second thanks to an RBI triple by Endy Rodriguez and a two-run homer by Liover Peguero.
“Today’s a hard day for everyone, and a tough day to pitch when you’re trying to stay locked in before the game but you’re also wondering if you’re buddy’s going to be there after the game,” Manning said. “It’s one of those things where you just have to put your head down and get to work.”
The Tigers scored their lone run in the seventh when Javier Baez singled and then scored on Akil Baddoo’s RBI single.
The Tigers have now lost six of their last seven games. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said rather than big-picture questions about the trade deadline, he was focused on trying to win with the group he has now.
“I’ve got a roomful of guys in there that are trying to get better and are going to try to win tomorrow afternoon,” he said. “We’ve got to focus on what we can control, which is trying to play more competitive baseball and winning more games.”
Up next: The Tigers and Pirates wrap up their brief two-game series on Wednesday at 12:35 p.m. Right-hander Osvaldo Bido (2-1, 4.50 ERA) will pitch for the Pirates.
And for the Tigers? It’s the guy who virtually nobody expected would be here: Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (6-5, 2.95 ERA) will take the mound one day after he exercised his right to veto a trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
