After being cut on Monday and Tuesday, NFL players who have been in the league for fewer than four seasons are put on waivers where the other 31 teams will be given the opportunity to claim the player on their current contract.
For the Miami Dolphins, they cut a number of young players that they were hoping to sneak onto the practice squad, but two of them, sixth-round pick Elijah Higgins and seventh-round pick Ryan Hayes were claimed by other teams.
[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]Higgins, the college wide receiver who’s converting to an NFL tight end, found a new home with the Arizona Cardinals, while Hayes, the versatile offensive tackle, was claimed by the Indianapolis Colts.
The former is Arizona’s fourth tight end behind Zach Ertz, Geoff Swaim and 2022 second-round pick Trey McBride. For Hayes, he’ll likely be the third-string tackle with Braden Smith and 2022 third-round selection Bernhard Raimann expected to start and 2023 fourth-round pick Blake Freeland being the swing.
Miami only had four draft picks in the 2023 NFL draft, and two of them are already gone less than five months later. That’s not a good feeling, especially considering the Dolphins can’t keep paying free agents and trading for superstars forever. Eventually, they’ll have to add in more homegrown talent.
Higgins and Hayes might not ever be starters or even contributors at the pro level, but now it feels like the picks were wasted because they’re not even suiting up in aqua and orange for a regular season game.
