Three more residents of Pinellas County nursing homes have died from the novel coronavirus, according to medical examiner reports released Wednesday.
Those were half of the six new COVID-19 deaths in Pinellas County reported by the Florida Department of Health that day, as the virus continues to rage through Florida’s elder care facilities.
Residents and staffers of long-term care now account for at least 534 of Florida’s deaths so far — more than a third of COVID-19 fatalities in the state.
The deaths reported Wednesday were connected with the Freedom Square retirement community in Seminole at 7800 Liberty Lane, St. Mark Village nursing home at 2655 Nebraska Ave. and Bardmoor Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center at 9035 Bryan Dairy Road.
The resident of Freedom Square was Alice Ford, 91, who was transported to Morton Plant Hospital on April 16 for shortness of breath and tachycardia. She was later moved to Suncoast Hospice Center and died on Monday.
Freedom Square has been dealing with a major COVID-19 outbreak of that so far has infected 102 staffers and residents, killing 21. Most of the infections came from the Seminole Pavilion Rehabilitation nursing home on Freedom Square’s campus.
The resident of St. Mark Village was Joe Parkinson, 77, who was transported to Mease Countryside Hospital on April 20 suffering from fever and cough. He died at the hospital on Tuesday.
At St. Mark Village, 27 residents and 11 staffers at have tested positive for the virus. Nine residents have died.
The resident of Bardmoor Oaks was Edna Blake, 83, who was admitted to St. Anthony’s Hospital with an altered mental status on April 29, records show. She initially tested negative for COVID-19, the report said, but tested positive the next day.
She was transferred to Suncoast Hospice Center and died on Tuesday.
This was the first death reported at Bardmoor Oaks — and the only case reported at the facility in the state’s daily report of coronavirus cases at long-term care facilities.
