The Arizona Cardinals will lose their preseason football games against the Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos as the NFL cuts two weeks from the preseason schedule, according to reports.
The league on Wednesday decided to cancel two weeks of preseason games, a person with knowledge of the move told USA TODAY Sports' Mike Jones. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the decision.
Pro Football Talk first reported the news.
The first and fourth weeks of the exhibition slate will be eliminated, according to the reports.
It was also reported that schedules will be reconfigured so that each team has one home game and one away contest.
It appears that the Arizona Cardinals will lose their Aug. 15 preseason road game against the Green Bay Packers and their Sept. 3 preseason game at home against the Denver Broncos.
Should they still start as scheduled, it appears that the Cardinals will open their preseason against the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, Aug. 22 at State Farm Stadium.
Barring changes, the team would then conclude its preseason against the Raiders in Las Vegas five days later on Thursday, Aug. 27.
Pro Football Talk reported that the league is expected to announce the news on Thursday.
NFL teams are still scheduled to have veterans report for training camp by July 28.
USA TODAY Sports' Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz wrote that canceling the first week of games provides a longer acclimation period for teams as they try to establish and implement protocols to mitigate exposure to and transmission of the coronavirus, while also providing additional time for players to work on conditioning after conducting the offseason virtually.
He added that eliminating the final week provides a greater buffer before the potential start of the season on Sept. 10.
Arizona is scheduled to open the 2020 season on Sept. 13 on the road against the San Francisco 49ers.
