MUNCIE, Ind. — Muncie Mall's survival has been in question since the departure of Carson's and Macy's. Once JCPenney closes, the shopping center will be without an anchor store.
There was hope when the mall gained new management, the Woodmont Company.
"New management means new ideas, new vision and a new start for Muncie, and I guarantee you brighter days are ahead," Mayor Dan Ridenour said when the mall's ownership shifted in May.
Since reopening in May, however, Muncie Mall has continued to see storefronts shuttered amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of Monday, the mall had about 17 permanently closed stores and restaurants, with three others preparing to lock their doors for good.
After it was announced the mall's JCPenney would close back in June, other stores followed suit, with Wireless Toybox, Art Spa and Nirvana closing permanently.
On Monday, Justice, which focuses on young girls' clothing, was holding its closeout sale. A few customers waited in line to enter the store, but not much product was left.
USAToday reported on July 23 that more than 150 Lane Bryant locations were slated to close, and Muncie's was on the list. It was the only location in Indiana closing.
Muncie's Lane Bryant had not started discounting its inventory early this week. The Star Press reached out to the company to see when sales would begin, but did not get an immediate response.
Two other stores, Victoria's Secret PINK and Lids, remained temporarily closed due to the pandemic, with no indication as to when they would reopen.
In May, USAToday reported Victoria's Secret would close about 250 stores in the U.S. and Canada in 2020, and its sister company, Bath and Body Works, would close 50.
However, L Brands, the parent company of the two retailers, has not announced which locations will get the ax.
JCPenney continues to hold its closing sale, with items now 40-60% off. As of Monday, plenty of clothes, shoes and home goods remained.
Kristen Bennett, manager of communications at the retailer, confirmed with The Star Press that liquidation sales are expected to take 10 to 16 weeks to complete. Muncie's location is currently wrapping up its seventh week.
