CLEARWATER — Two people were hurt, one critically, in a lightning strike Sunday afternoon at the north section of Clearwater Beach, police said.

The call came in about 2:15 p.m. as a line of storms moved onshore from the Gulf of Mexico. One victim, 37, was unconscious and not breathing when a Clearwater police officer reached him, police said. The officer began CPR until lifeguards arrived to take over medical treatment.

Clearwater Fire & Rescue crews were called and the victim was taken to Morton Plant Hospital in critical condition. The second victim, 43, was a few feet away from the first and is in stable condition.

The incident occurred on the beach at the end of Somerset Street, about halfway between the waterline and the dunes.
