For the first time in a week, Red Sox pitchers gave up fewer than eight runs Sunday night. But Boston still lost, dropping its seventh straight game in a 4-2 loss to the Yankees.

Starter Chris Mazza lasted just three innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four batters. Mazza -- the 10th pitcher to start a game for Boston through 22 games -- took the loss in his first career major league start.

New York scratched together some early runs in the first two innings, with Mike Ford putting the Yankees up 1-0 with an RBI single in the first and Gleyber Torres doubling the lead with an RBI double that bounced off first base in the second. After Kevin Pillar homered off Yankees starter J.A. Happ in the third, Ford put New York up 4-1 with his second home run of the season.

The Red Sox’ bats went quiet against Happ and the Yankees’ bullpen, tallying just five total hits. Alex Verdugo had two of them -- a single and a double. Happ entered the night with a 10.29 ERA but allowed a single run on three hits over 5 ⅔ innings.

Boston threatened with mini-rallies in the sixth and seventh, putting two men on in each inning. Christian Vazquez doubled and scored on a Zack Britton error in the ninth to cut the deficit to two runs before Kevin Plawecki -- representing the tying run -- struck out.

Ryan Weber threw three scoreless innings of relief for the Red Sox, who have now lost 10 in row at Yankee Stadium and 13 out of 14 there since the beginning of the 2019 season. Boston is now 6-16 on the season.

Verdugo has impressive night

Verdugo had a productive night in all facets, shining on both sides of the ball in the loss. In addition to going 2-for-3 with a double, the outfielder also stole a base and gunned down Mike Tauchman at second base with an impressive throw in the third inning.

Verdugo’s throw was clocked at 81 mph.

Perez gets ball in series finale

Left-hander Martin Perez will start for the Red Sox in the series finale Monday night opposite Yankees lefty Jordan Montgomery. Perez, who has a 2.20 ERA in his last three starts, will make his first start against New York of 2020. Montgomery allowed one run on five hits over 5 ⅔ innings against the Yankees in a start on July 31.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
