ECI Week 2 🏈 rundown: Delta, Yorktown emerge victorious; Central, Wes-Del lose - The Star Press

MUNCIE, Ind. — Week 2 was shaping up to be the first week when all nine of our area football teams played. That is, until Monroe Central's game against Union City was canceled hours before kick due to a positive COVID-19 case among a member of the Golden Bears coaching staff.

Still, the games went on. On Friday, both Delta and Yorktown earned impressive victories while Wes-Del came up just short in a single score game.

Here is a look at the scores and stats from each of the Week 2 games featuring East Central Indiana teams:

Yorktown 35, Muncie Central 8

Yorktown came out ready to go on senior night. The Tigers went up 14-0 in the first quarter thanks to a pair of touchdown runs from Jamarius Evans. In the second quarter, Blair Webster found Alex Gibson on a 19-yard touchdown pass and Jack Stinson followed that up with a nine-yard rushing touchdown of his own.

In the third quarter, Evans scored his third touchdown of the game to start the running clock. After struggling to move the ball in the first three quarters, Muncie Central's Michael Gross was able to get the Bearcats a couple of first downs and eventually punch in an 11-yard rushing touchdown to give Central its first score of the year. Shoka Griffin converted to two-point conversion after a long run on the same drive.

The Tigers are 2-0. The Bearcats are 0-1.

Yorktown 14 14 7 0 — 35

Delta 42, Eastbrook 28

Delta opened up its season with an impressive 42-28 win over top-ranked Class 2A Eastbrook. With about eight minutes left in the game the score was tied but a pair of late touchdowns pushed the Eagles to victory.

Delta opened up the night with the lead, thanks to a six-yard touchdown run from Brady Hunt and never let Eastbrook pull ahead. The Eagles next score came on a touchdown pass from Hunt to Logan Manor, which the pair replicated in the fourth quarter to put Delta up 35-28. The final score of the game came on a long touchdown run JaVaughn Whitfield with 2:16 left in the game. Whitfield also scored on a four-yard touchdown run in the third and Carson Neu caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Hunt in the second quarter.

Offensively, the Eagles has 505 total yards and were led by Hunt (14-for-21, 187 yards, three TDs); Whitfield (22 carries, 138 yards, two TDs) and Manor (five catches, 59 yards, two TDs). 

The Eagles are 1-0.

Delta 7 13 8 14 — 42

Eastbrook 6 14 8 0 — 28

Tri-Central 13, Wes-Del 8

Wes-Del suffered its first lost of the season, falling to Tri-Central 13-8 on the road. The Warriors first score came with 7:31 left in the game when Eric Harlan found Nate Steele on a two-yard touchdown pass. A two-point conversion from Harlan to Will Kelly put the Warriors up 8-7. Under four minutes later, however, Tri-Central scored the games final touchdown on a 39-yard run.

Wes-Del accumulated 165 yards of total offense compared to Tri-Central's 262 (254 of which came on the ground). Offensively, the Warriors were led by Harlan (100 total yards, one TD), Will Kelly (61 rushing yards), Joel Dowling (35 receiving yards) and Nate Steele (16 receiving yards, one TD). Defensively, Jesus Cardoza (11 total tackles) and Avery Carmin (nine tackles, 3 TFL) led the way for Wes-Del.

The Warriors are 1-1. 

Wes-Del 0 0 0 8 — 8

Tri-Central 0 0 7 6 — 13

Eastern (Greentown) 42, Blackford 0

Following a tight loss to Wes-Del in Week 1, Blackford was shut out in a 42-0 loss against Eastern (Greentown). Up 14-0 at half, Eastern scored four second half touchdowns (three in the third quarter) to secure the comfortable victory.

Offensively, Blackford was led by Carson Sehy (3-for-9, 61 yards), Cameron Elam (47 total yards) and Connor Gulley (78 total yards). Defensively, Scott Winger led the way with eight tackles (five solo). 

The Bruins are 0-2.

Eastern 14 0 21 7 — 42

Huntington North 47, Jay County 8

Jay County dropped its second game of the season in a 47-8 loss to Huntington North. The Patriots were down 40 late in the third when they got onto the scoreboard thanks to a 33-yard run from Bailey Cox. Quinn Faulkner scored the two-point conversion following a botched PAT attempt.

The Patriots are 0-2.

Huntington North 6 21 13 7 — 47

Jay County 0 0 8 0 — 8

Franklin County 48, Winchester 7

Winchester suffered a 48-7 loss to Franklin County at home. After Franklin County went up 28-0 at the end of the first quarter, Winchester scored its sole touchdown on a one-yard run from Kollin Orr. 

Offensively, Winchester was led by Brayden Tippett (6-for-12, 39 yards), Orr (15 rushes, 76 yards, one TD) and Cooper McCoy (24 receiving yards). Defensively, Trenton Edwards led the Golden Falcons with 10 tackles (eight solo) and Parker Sheets added six tackles (1.5 TFL). 

The Golden Falcons are 0-2.

Franklin County 28 7 7 6 — 48

Winchester 0 7 0 0 — 7
