While the KC Chiefs have a lot riding on Sunday night’s game vs Denver, the Broncos aren’t in that same boat. That makes them dangerous.
The Kansas City Chiefs continue to sit in the No. 2 seed in the playoffs thanks to the Steelers refusing to lose. It’s looking very likely that the Steelers win the No. 1 seed and the only first-round bye that comes with it meaning the Chiefs have to play perfectly in their final five regular-season games.
Sometimes when teams know there’s a lot on the line their play can sometimes reflect their worries. That’s what worries me when the defending Super Bowl champions host the Denver Broncos this weekend on Sunday Night Football.
This isn’t to say that I think the Chiefs will lose to the Broncos but rather that a team with nothing to lose is a dangerous team, especially to a team like the Chiefs. Denver is 4-7 and while they’re technically still “in the hunt” for a playoff spot, they’d have to win out and hope that a bunch of other teams lose out in order to make it in. That’s not the likeliest of scenarios. This means that Denver really doesn’t have much to lose this year.
Throw in the fact that Drew Lock has to start showing he’s the right guy for the job in Denver and this is a team that has a lot to prove and can take the risks to do so. We saw the Chiefs struggle against a team in a similar situation (Carolina in Week 9) and the end result was nearly catastrophic, as the Panthers had a fighting chance to win that game in the final seconds.
Carolina went for it on fourth down, pulled off key fake plays, and continued to be a thorn in the side of the Chiefs all day long. While Christian McCaffrey played a big part in why the Panthers were able to make it such a close game, the Broncos have two talented running backs and their offense is capable of scoring points (Jerry Jeudy is going to be a very good football player).
Lock and the Broncos took down the Miami Dolphins two weeks ago and the Dolphins are currently a playoff team. Denver’s defense limited the Fins offense in that one and the offense did enough to secure the win. While the Chiefs are much better than the Dolphins, their defense has been suspect recently and that could be problematic when the Broncos take more risks than usual.
Kansas City should win this game, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think the Denver Broncos will make things difficult for the defending champs, especially considering how KC has failed to put away close games.
