Minnesota on track to lose a congressional seat - KBJR 6

DULUTH, MN-- Early census tallies show the state of Minnesota is more than 25,000 people short of holding on to all eight of its congressional seats.

That's according to recent population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

While the state of Minnesota is growing, it is not growing as fast as the rest of the country, said Aaron Brown, an Iron Range Political Analyst.

"The threshold for 8 seats, which is what we currently have is no longer being met. We are likely our state will drop down to 7 seats," said Brown.

This means the 8th Congressional District as we know it would be no more. New district lines would have to be drawn.

"I would expect whatever district we end up in to be very large, even larger than this current district. It will include places that haven't been together in a congressional district before," said Brown.

A larger congressional district could also have an effect on state legislative redistricting, which will be felt by smaller towns.

"We may see a dramatic shift in the legislative seats. Maybe losing, losing a house member of northeastern Minnesota. Maybe even a senate member as these districts get much larger and reach to the west and south," said Brown.

The effects of a new congressional district would also be felt on a national level.

"It means just a little less representation in Congress. One less electoral vote, we will go from 10 to 9," Brown said.

While there is a loss in political clout, Brown said there is a deeper issue at hand.

"If you want to change this, it involves attracting people, all kinds of people to come and live in our area. That is the ticket to reverse the kind of losses we are seeing," Brown said.

Census tallies won't be final until some time after the new year.

Brown added if our population is low enough to lose the seat, we will see new preliminary maps in 2021.

Final decisions are made during the legislative session of the election year. The next election year will be the spring of 2022.
