Elon improved to 3-1 overall, while the Aggies dropped to 0-2.
Two Aggies did come away with singles victories in the first matchup. Sophomore Esteban Lopez defeated Chung-Han Tsai 6-3, 2-6 and 10-4 in the tiebreaker at No. 3 singles. Lopez finished 3-4 last season in singles competition with wins at Charlotte, at Davidson and at King University.
Freshman Mike Ogundele got his first win as an Aggie with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Maxwell Zucker at No. 4 singles.
The 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rookie of the year, junior Vasil Ivanov, came close to helping the Aggies win another matchup. He lost 6-7, 6-1 and 10-3 in the tiebreaker to Camilo Ponce. Ivanov came into Saturday's opener with 13 career singles victories.
N.C. A&T's other singles competition in the first match saw Aggies fifth-year senior Nicolas Arduh lose to Kyle Frankel, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. The Phoenix swept all three doubles matchups to win the doubles point, and they won two singles matches by default.
N.C. A&T did not have as much success as they did in the second match. Elon took the doubles point by winning two out of three of the competitions. The duo of Arduh and Ivanov did win at No. 1 doubles over Nicholas Campbell and Camilo Ponce, 6-3. Arduh and Ivanov went 3-6 last season and 1-7 in 2019 as a doubles team.
The singles competitions started with No. 1 Arduh losing to Akram El Sallaly of Elon, 6-0, 6-1. Ivanov lost to Campbell, 6-1, 6-1 before Lopez played another exciting match. Lopez followed his tiebreaker win over Tsai with a 3-6, 6-2, 14-12 in the tiebreaker loss to Jacob Bicknell.
Elon won the other three competitions by default.
The Aggies return to action at 11 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 14, when they travel to Charlotte to face Queens University of Charlotte.
