With the number of shot attempts he generated in first half of the game, it just seemed like a goal was going to come for Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin.

The star winger did eventually make the Devils pay, scoring a go-ahead goal at 13:37 of the second period. That proved to be the difference in a 3-2 Devils loss on Sunday at Prudential Center in Newark.

The Devils fell to 0-3-0 against the Capitals this season with back-to-back home defeats this weekend. They played Sunday’s game without captain Nico Hischier, who was ruled out after taking a puck to the head in Saturday’s loss.

The Capitals used a big first period to earn Saturday’s win, but it was the Devils who struck first on Sunday. Mikhail Maltsev, who jumped into the lineup for Hischier, scored a deflected wrister from the right circle at 6:45 of the first period. P.K. Subban and Pavel Zacha earned assists on the play, which extended Zacha’s point streak to 10 games.

But the Capitals responded with a Jakub Vrana goal at 15:39 of the first. Vrana scored off his own rebound on a rush after Mackenzie Blackwood made the initial save.

The Capitals grabbed a 2-1 lead at 2:32 of the second period when Nicklas Backstroke finished a 2-on-1 off a pass from Tom Wilson.

Yegor Sharangovich pulled the Devils even just 48 seconds later, firing a shot past Capitals goalie Ilya Samsonov on a rush at 3:20.

Ovechkin’s winning goal came at 13:37 of the second period.

The Devils held the Capitals without a shot attempt for more than 16 minutes to start the third period, but they couldn’t convert their pressure into the tying goal. The Capitals had just one shot in the third period, but the Devils put only four on goal.

Nico Hischier misses game

Hischier sat out after taking a puck to the visor and helmet late in Saturday’s loss to the Capitals. He was bloodied up after a P.K. Subban shot was deflected into his head.

Devils head coach Lindy Ruff did not have an update on Hischier, other than ruling him out for Sunday’s game. He called him day-to-day while the Devils continue to evaluate him.
