CHARLESTON, S.C. – North Carolina A&T fell to Charleston Southern, 1-0, in their season opener Saturday afternoon at CSU Ballpark in non-conference baseball.
"Good to be back playing baseball," said head coach Ben Hall. "That was high-level pitching and defense today. Both teams played really well."
Aggies senior right-hander Michael Johnson and CSU starting pitcher Jordan Carr battled all day in a pitcher's duel. Johnson went 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on one hit with seven strikeouts in a losing effort.
"Really proud of Michael Johnson," said Hall. "His competitive nature is outstanding, and he had full control of the game out there."
Carr pitched 5.2 innings and allowed three hits and no runs with four strikeouts. Connor Campbell got the win in relief, going 3.0 innings, giving up four hits with three strikeouts.
The Aggies (0-1) couldn't drive in that much-needed run, stranding five runners throughout the game.
Sophomore infielder Tony Mack led off the game and lined a single down the left-field line but was thrown out at second base trying to stretch into a double. Both teams went hitless until after Mack's single until the top of the fifth when junior infielder Justin Williams roped a double to center field.
A groundout advanced him to third, but another groundout ended the inning and stranded Williams on third.
Charleston's Trotton Harlan started off the home-half of the seventh with a walk. A sacrifice bunt and fly out later, Harlan stood at on third. Senior all-conference infielder Ari Sechopoulos singled to drive in Harlan for the Cougars only hit and the game's only run.
The Aggies threatened in the top of the eighth. Sophomore transfer Grant Tilley singled to right field, senior all-conference catcher Ryne Stanley laid down a sacrifice bunt, and freshman T.J. Ash singled to put runners on first and second with only one out. Mack followed and grounded into a double play to end the inning.
"There were some offensive situations we would definitely like to have back," said Hall. "We have to learn from them, grow from this one, and be better tomorrow."
The Aggies will face Charleston again Sunday, Feb. 21, in a doubleheader starting at noon.
