DETROIT -- The Indians once again kept Miguel Cabrera within the confines of Comerica Park much to the disappointment of a boisterous Saturday night crowd in the Motor City.
What they didn’t do was win a game. Bryan Shaw, the fifth link in a bullpen game that started with Sam Hentges, allowed two runs and three hits in the eighth inning as the Tigers beat the Indians, 6-4.
The Cabrera Meter moved a bit, but not in the direction the 32,845 fans wanted. Cabrera is still at 499 homers, but his single in the first inning moved him to within 49 hits of 3,000. But in his next three plate appearances, Cabrera hit a fly ball to center in the third, was hit by a pitch by Blake Parker in the fifth -- the faithful did not like that -- and walked on Shaw’s 3-2 pitch before being replaced by pinch-runner Jacob Robson.
Shaw (5-6) allowed three straight singles following Cabrera’s leadoff walk. The last one, a bloop to center field by Eric Haase over a pulled-in infield for two runs, was the difference maker.
When Shaw walked Cabrera to start the eighth, the crowd booed.
“Hey, it’s the situation of the game,” said DeMarlo Hale, Indians acting manager. “We went at Miggy all night. Parker hit him, but he was trying to pitch to both sides of the plate. We’re not going to change because he’s chasing something. Shaw faced him Friday night so he was going at him with certain pitches he missed with.”
Jeinmer Candelario and Renato Nunez singled to load the bases after Cabrera’s leadoff walk. That’s when Haase’s dropped his single into short center field.
“I don’t think they hit Shaw very hard, but they found some green out there in the outfield,” said Hale. “I know Candelario’s (broken) bat went all the way to the second baseman. You move on. You turn the page and come back Sunday and try to win a series.”
Following Cabrera’s single in the first off Hentges, Candelario hit a line drive down the left-field line that just made it over the fence for a homer and a 2-0 lead off Hentges.
The Indians responded with a run in the second. Wilson Ramos drew a leadoff walk against Wily Peralta and Oscar Mercado doubled him home with a shot down the left-field line that bounced past Willi Castro to allow the 240-pound Ramos, nicknamed The Buffalo, to score from first.
Mercado took third on a passed ball by Haase, but Peralta stranded him by striking out Yu Chang, Andres Gimenez and Ernie Clement in succession.
The Tigers stretched their lead to 3-1 in the second on consecutive one-out singles by Castro and Victor Reyes. Castro singled to right and stole second. Reyes delivered him with a single to right.
Hale said they were thinking of challenging Castro’s steal, but they couldn’t get a good angle on the play.
“They give you 20 seconds (to decide if you’re going to challenge)‚” said Hale. “I thought we still needed more time. DJ (Reyburn, plate umpire) is coming over and you have to make a decision. I hope that’s something they revisit next year because 20 seconds is pretty fast.”
The Indians missed a scoring chance in the third. Myles Straw opened with a double and went to third on Bradley Zimmer’s bloop single to center. It looked like Straw could have scored, but held up to make sure it wasn’t caught.
The inning was sitting on a tee for the Indians with Jose Ramirez and Franmil Reyes due to bat. Ramirez, who entered the game in an 8-for-40 funk, hit a fly to left that was too shallow to score Straw. Reyes, in a 0-for-18 skid, hit a fly ball to right that had the same issue as Ramirez’s. Peralta ended the inning by striking out Ramos.
The Indians went 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position in the game.
The Tigers made it a 4-1 game in the fourth on Zach Short’s two-out single off Trevor Stephan. It appeared Stephan, who relieved Hentges in the third, was out of the inning when the Indians turned a 4-6-3 double play on Castro’s grounder to second. The Tigers challenged the call and it was overturned with the Indians getting credit for the out at second with Castro safe at first.
Stephan walked Reyes and then allowed Short’s single.
The Indians were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position entering the fifth. Straw drew a leadoff walk against Peralta and stole second. It was his 20th steal of the season and third since the Indians traded for him on July 31.
Ramirez, with one out, tripled to the gap in right center field to make it 4-2. Reyes ended his 0-for-19 skid with a soft single to right to score Ramirez.
The Indians made it 4-4 in the seventh as Zimmer scored on a ground out to short by Ramos. Zimmer reached on a leadoff bunt single and went to third on Ramirez’s double to center.
Ramirez, who is struggling in August, doubled and tripled Saturday night. He leads the big leagues with 316 extra base hits since 2017.
“I don’t worry too much about Jose,” said Hale. “He’s that kind of player and hitter. There aren’t going to be a lot of days where he’s not going to be productive. It was good to see him drive some balls in that right center field gap.”
