The union representing nearly 1,500 educators in Naperville School District 203 has filed a 10-day notice of intent to strike.
Naperville Unit Education Association filed the notice with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board following a Monday contract negotiation session, according to a statement released by District 203.
Last week, union President Dan Iverson said it was possible teachers would strike if there was no contract agreement by the first day of school on Aug. 19.
District officials were critical of the union’s action.
“Particularly given the difficult circumstances for students, parents and our community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we are very disappointed that Naperville 203 educators would delay the return-to-school while negotiations continue,” according to the district statement.
A federal mediator has been working with both sides in an attempt to resolve the contract sticking points, the two largest of which are family leave and pay.
In the update, District 203 officials said some movement had been made on the salary issue during bargaining Monday but they were still far apart on family leave.
District 203 maintains the union’s notice to strike is illegal because the state’s Educational Labor Relations Act requires proposed offers be published for 14 days before a strike notice is filed so the community has time to review the proposal and offer input, according to the statement.
While both sides have posted documents on their respective sites, the labor board has not been been given the latest proposal to post, the statement said.
The two sides are scheduled to meet again Friday and Monday, and may meet again Aug. 17 and 18.
