CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Kennesaw State women's soccer team fell to Charlotte on Thursday evening, as the 49ers (1-0-0, 0-0-0) defeated the Owls (0-1-0, 0-0-0) in a 1-0 contest at Transamerica Field.
"Obviously I'm disappointed in the result, but I'm thrilled with the growth of our program," said head coach Benji Walton. "I think we took a big step in our development for this season. We had a lot of big contributions from our girls and while we don't want to lose, we came up against a great opponent tonight. We came just a hair shy after creating a lot of chances, so there's a lot to be encouraged about."
The two teams were evenly matched in the first half, as both teams methodically felt each other out.
Tianna Rivera ran through on goal 22 minutes into the game, but a crucial touch from a Charlotte defender was able to see the ball out for a corner. The sophomore winger was able to create a number of chances throughout the 90 minutes.
A defensive miscue from Kennesaw State created a chance for the North Carolina team, but a sliding intervention from left back Kathryn Schreck swept up any danger.
The half ended in a 0-0 draw, as the two sides were able to muster a total of four shots.
The two teams came back out for the second half, which began with the same pace played in the first half; however, Charlotte was able to pounce on a loose ball from a corner kick and force it in for the opening goal in the 54th minute.
A UNCC player curled a shot from the 18-yard line less than three minutes later, but mainstay goalkeeper Dylan Pixton got equal to it to prevent a 2-0 scoreline.
The Owls grew more and more into the game, culminating in a golden opportunity for junior forward Erin Miller. The Marietta, Ga. native's drilled shot found the grateful hands of the 49er goalkeeper.
With lightning threatening the area, the horn of Transamerica Field blew to signify a weather delay. As a game can not be restarted three hours after its scheduled kickoff time according to the NCAA rules, the game was called with the final scoreline staying 1-0 to the Charlotte 49ers.
The Owls move on to their home opener on Sunday, August 22, with Kennesaw State set to take the pitch at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at 1 p.m.
