PITTSFIELD — Damage to electronics from a series of lightning strikes in June still is being repaired and safeguards are being put into place around the courthouse, jail and Pike County government building.

The county’s government building, which houses the county clerk’s office, treasurer’s office, and zoning and assessment offices, has been without phone service since the strike in late June.

Several projects are under way to restore phone services to the government building, county board Chairman Jim Sheppard said, noting phone services have been restored to the jail and courthouse.

“We have been without phone services at the government for 35 days now,” Sheppard said. “We are working to get those back up and running soon as possible.”

The jail’s phone services, including some aspects of the 911 system, were restored fairly quickly, Sheppard said.

Lightning struck the jail and traveled through network lines, knocking out communication between county buildings. Additional lightning strikes hit county buildings in the days following — three total between June 24 and 28.

It has cost roughly $20,000 to replace the damaged equipment and there will be additional costs to get it installed and to repair the network lines, Sheppard said.

All of the costs will be covered by the county’s insurance.

In addition to repairing the damage caused by the strikes, the county also has received several quotes for grounding work that hopefully will prevent damage from future lightning strikes, Sheppard said.

“We’ve talked about several grounding projects since them, some electrical projects,” he said.

The projected cost to install lightning rods around county buildings is roughly $25,000.

This isn’t the first time the county has had problems because of lightning strikes, Sheppard said, noting the jail was hit several years ago and several towers throughout the county also have been hit.

“I don’t remember any that were as significant as this one,” Sheppard said. “But that is why we are looking to get the grounding done, so we don’t have to go through this again.”
