With the Brewers magic number at three, they have a division title in sight. Unfortunately, their wheels have been spinning over the last few days.
The Brewers hoped that having Brandon Woodruff on the mound would get them back on track. It didn’t start well, as Woodruff walked Tommy Edman to begin the game. Edman then stole second, moved to third on a Paul Goldschmidt groundout, and then scored on a Tyler O’Neill sacrifice fly. With that, the Cardinals had a 1-0 lead after the top of the first.
After that, both starting pitchers dug in and kept the offenses in check. Woodruff did allow back-to-back singles in the third, but nothing else as he struck out ten over six innings. On the other side, Jake Woodford allowed just two hits and a walk in five innings, with five strikeouts. One hit was in the third by Woodruff, and the other was by Luis Urias in the fifth.
It then went to the bullpens to back up their starters. Alex Reyes of the Cardinals walked Kolten Wong in the sixth but then struck out the side. Brad Boxberger took the seventh for the Brewers, allowed a two-out single to Yadier Molina but nothing else. Genesis Cabrera took the seventh for the Cardinals and struck out two Brewers in an inning of work.
Jake Cousins took the eighth for the Brewers. Cousins walked Lars Nootbaar with one out, who then stole second. Edman then drove in Nootbaar with a single, and the Cardinals had a 2-0 lead. Edman stole second for the second time in the game after that, but Cousins finished the inning without allowing him to score. The Brewers then faced Luis Garcia in the bottom of the eighth. Daniel Vogelbach drew a one-out walk to put a runner on base, and Kolten Wong hit a deep double to right center that moved Vogelbach to third. Jackie Bradley Jr. came in to pinch run for Vogelbach, and scored on a Willy Adames sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, that’s where the scoring ended as Eduardo Escobar struck out to end the inning.
Brent Suter took the ninth for the Brewers and allowed a double to Jose Rondon, who advanced to third on a fly out, but did not score and kept it a 2-1 deficit. The Brewers then had to face Cardinals closer Giovanny Gallegos to try and come back. Avisail Garcia began the inning with a single, but Lorenzo Cain grounded out to take Garcia’s place on base (after a review overturned the original double play call). Urias then drew a walk to put two runners on, and Cain advanced to third on a fly out by Manny Pina. With Christian Yelich coming up to bat, Gallegos intentionally walked him to load the bases and bring up pinch hitter Pablo Reyes, the Brewers’ last bench player. Reyes gave it a good effort, but struck out to end the game.
The Brewers will try to break their three-game losing streak tomorrow evening against the Cardinals. Brett Anderson will return from the IL to make the start, facing Miles Mikolas of the Cardinals. First pitch is at 6:40 pm.
