Have you ever seen a game that could’ve gone either way but you felt it should’ve been won by your team? This was one of those games. Right when everyone might’ve thought it was a matter of time for the Astros to seal the win, the Athletics tied it up and ended up winning it 2-1 on a walk-off on Saturday night.
This was a beautiful pitching-and-defense game. Lefties Framber Valdez and Sean Manaea got into a nail-biting duel. And Framber could have come out with the best part, though this isn’t a game of could.
Backed up by some defensive gems from his infield teammates, Framber was solid for the second start in a row and was in line for another victory. With a 1-0 lead in the seventh thanks to a clutch home run from Kyle Tucker’s bat, Valdez was one pitch away from pitching through seven innings, but he plunked Elvis Andrus and was replaced after 95 pitches (52 for strikes).
Kendall Graveman was brought in to face Josh Harrison, who hit an RBI single to tied things up. Graveman wasn’t sharp at all on Saturday as he got in trouble again in the eighth, loading the bases with only one out. Fortunately, he struck out Seth Brown and retired Sean Murphy with a grounder.
Then, the difficult inning came to the scene. Ryan Pressly came out of the ‘pen and he took the loss in a matter of seconds. Ten pitches after he stepped in the mound, the Athletics had hit a single (Andrus) and a walk-off double (Starling Marté) to cause the Astros their 64th loss of the season.
The Astros’ offense stayed quiet and unproductive for the third game in a row (all losses), a span in which they’ve scored only five times. On Sunday (3:07 pm CT), they will try to avoid their first three-game series sweep since June 28-30 against the Orioles. Veteran Jake Odorizzi gets the ball for the ‘Stros.
