Restricted free-agent center Jesperi Kotkaniemi will join the Carolina Hurricanes on a one-year, $6.1 million contract after the Montreal Canadiens declined to match Carolina's offer sheet. Montreal had until 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday to match the offer.
The deal also includes a rarely seen $20 signing bonus. The Canadiens will receive a first- and third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft from Carolina as compensation.
"Carolina has used a tool available to them in the collective bargaining agreement and we accept that decision," Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin said in a news release.
Kotkaniemi, 21, had five goals and 15 assists for the Canadiens in 56 games this season. He was 12th on the Canadiens among forwards in minutes during their playoff run to the Stanley Cup Final.
After declining to match the offer sheet for Kotkaniemi, Montreal acquired center Christian Dvorak from the Arizona Coyotes for two draft picks.
Dvorak, 25, was selected by Arizona in the second round of the 2014 draft. Last season, Dvorak had 17 goals and 14 assists in 56 games and was fourth on the Coyotes in minutes.
Arizona will receive the better first-round pick of Montreal and Carolina in 2022, and Montreal’s second-round pick in 2024. If either Montreal or Carolina, or both, end up with top-10 picks based on final draft order, the Canadiens will send the worse of those two picks to Arizona in addition to the 2024 second rounder.
