Jose Ramirez returns, Framil Reyes still missing as Cleveland Indians lose to Red Sox, 8-5 - cleveland.com

BOSTON -- Well, at least Jose Ramirez showed up. There is still a BOLO out for Franmil Reyes.

BOLO, for those who don’t watch cop shows on TV, is short for Be On The Look Out.

Ramirez, after taking an 0-for-11 in the Indians’ three-game sweep over Kansas City to start this trip, doubled, homered and singled in five at-bats Friday night against Boston. It didn’t do Cal Quantrill or the Indians much good as the Red Sox played Home Run Derby on the way to a 8-5 win at Fenway Park.

Reyes, meanwhile, went 1-for-5 to extend his skid on this trip to 1-for-17.

The loss ended the Indians’ winning streak at four games, one short of their season high. The Red Sox, who hit four homers, have won eight of their last 12 despite dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak that has put eight of their players on the injured list.

August couldn’t have gone much better for Quantrill. He went 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in six starts. He drew some votes for AL Pitcher of the Month, but September did not start well for the right-hander.

Kyle Schwarber, the ghost from the Indians past, continued to haunt them in the present. He started the first inning with 428-foot homer to center field on Quantrill’s second pitch. It’s the second time in the last six games that Schwarber has taken Quantrill deep in the first inning.

Schwarber has eight leadoff homers this season -- one with Boston and seven with Washington. He’s at 28 homers and counting.

Kevin Plawecki, the former Indians catcher, made it 2-0 in the second with a homer down the left-field line over The Green Monster. It was his second homer of the season.

The Red Sox were leading 2-0, but when Quantrill was forced to pitch out of a bases-loaded jam with one out in the third, the game seemed more one-sided than that. Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez hit consecutive one-out singles and Alex Verdugo walked to load the bases. Quantrill, however, showed the moxie he’s gained this year by striking out Hunter Renfroe and getting Plawecki to hit into a force play at second.

When Ramirez started the fourth with his 32nd homer of the season, a 397-foot drive over the bullpens in right field, the Indians were right back in the game at 2-1.

Quantrill, however, had trouble keeping the ball in the green jewel called Fenway. It was his first time on the mound at Fenway and those green walls tend to close in on some pitchers.

Boston’s first two batters in the fourth, Bobby Dalbec and Jack Lopez, went quietly. But Jonathan Arauz, one of the players the Red Sox recalled because of the COVID-19 outbreak, homered to right for a 3-1 lead.

It was Arauz who hit a game-winning three-run homer off James Karinchak in the eighth inning at Progressive Field on Aug. 27. It was his first homer in the big leagues and Karinchak was optioned to Class AAA Columbus the next day.

“It’s definitely a unique place to play,” said Quantrill, whose father Paul pitched for the Red Sox. “A couple of short porches. A big wall. The outfield is tough to play. I think the guys did a decent job tonight. There is definitely an advantage to knowing this park.”

Austin Hedges, like all good catchers, did his best to support his pitcher. Hedges lined a two-run homer over The Monster off starter Nathan Eovaldi in the seventh to tie the score at 3-3. Sandwiched around the homer were singles by Bobby Bradley and Andres Gimenez.

Gimenez, who beat Eovaldi to first with a headfirst slide, stole second after Adam Ottavino (4-3) relieved. The Indians had two chances to get him home with the go-ahead run, but Myles Shaw and Amed Rosario struck out to end the inning.

“That was a big hit by Hedgie there,” said Quantrill. “It’s too bad we couldn’t finish it off. But I thought we showed good resilience. We put up quality at-bats all the way through, including the ninth inning.”

Quantrill (4-3, 3.15) came out for the seventh, but walked pinch-hitter Travis Shaw to bring Arauz to the plate once again. Arauz banged a double off The Monster as Shaw stopped at third. Trevor Stephan relieved and Schwarber struck again.

He greeted Stephan with a two-run double for a 5-3 lead. Stephan, the Rule 5 rookie, struck out the next two batters and intentionally walked Verdugo. Renfro, the next batter, stuck a fork in the Indians with a three-run homer to left for an 8-3 lead. Renfro, who hit a 2-2 slider, waited until he was almost at first base before flipping his bat.

Boston sent 11 batters to the plate in the five-run seventh. They left the bases loaded as well.

“It got away from us a little bit in that five-run seventh,” said acting manager DeMarlo Hale. “I thought Stephan really was one pitch from getting out of it when he threw the fastball (to Renfro). It should have been a little higher. But we battled back.”

The Indians did not stop after Boston’s five-run seventh. Bradley singled home a run in the eighth and Ramirez made it 8-5 with an RBI single in the ninth before Garrett Whitlock struck out Reyes and Zimmer with runners on first and third.

Quantrill allowed five runs on seven hits in six innings. Three were home runs. In six starts covering 38 innings in August, Quantrill allowed just two homers.

Welcome to Fenway.

Next: RHP Eli Morgan (2-6, 5.98) vs. RHP Tanner Houck (0-3, 3.63) Saturday at 4:10 p.m. Bally Sports Greats Lakes, WTAM, WMMS and the Indians radio network will carry the game.
