Striking employees at a Sysco warehouse will go back to work after reaching a tentative agreement on a new contract with the food distributor, the union representing the workers said Thursday.
Early Monday, 125 members of the Teamsters Local 703 went on strike at the Des Plaines facility, disrupting some food deliveries. The union said Sysco had failed to bargain in good faith on a new contract. Negotiations began in January and the workers’ contract expired in February 2020 but was temporarily extended.
“We are pleased Sysco has decided to finally come to the table and give our members the workplace protections and respect they deserve. We tried to avoid a strike at all costs, but it proved a necessary action to inspire dialogue,” Teamsters Local 703 Vice President Pat Bruno said in a news release.
Houston, Texas-based Sysco sells and distributes food products to businesses such as restaurants, schools and health care facilities. The company has more than 58,000 employees at 343 distribution facilities worldwide and serves more than 650,000 customer locations, according to its website.
Local 703 members will vote on whether to ratify the contract late Thursday. The warehouse workers and Sysco drivers who are members of Teamsters Local 710 and supported the strike will go back to work within 24 hours, the union said in the news release.
Sysco could not immediately be reached for comment. Earlier this week, the company said the union wanted to include “illegal language” in the contract terms.
