The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are now 91-70 and set for extra games after Boston beat the Washington Nationals and New York fell to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.

The Red Sox gave up the tying run on a Juan Soto sac fly in the eighth inning but rallied with four runs in the top of the ninth, ultimately winning 5-3. Boston holds the playoff tiebreaker over the Yankees based on head-to-head wins and will host the wild-card game if they win again Sunday.

At 90-71, the Blue Jays are now one game back and the Mariners are 1 1/2 games behind.

The Red Sox could have clinched a wild-card spot with a win and losses by both the Jays and Mariners. Tanner Houck started Saturday's game for Boston against the Nationals; he didn't allow a hit or walk and struck out eight in five innings.

The Yankees needed both the Mariners and Blue Jays to lose in order to clinch a wild-card spot Saturday. Instead, they guaranteed they would play an extra game this season after losing for the second straight game to the Rays, 12-2.

The Blue Jays took an early lead Saturday and beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-1. The game was briefly delayed after home plate umpire Chris Guccione felt his heart racing and left as a precaution, but resumed with a three-man crew with Chris Conroy moving from second base to behind home plate.

The Mariners face the Los Angeles Angels in Seattle at 9:10 p.m. ET.
