Led by five innings from starter Ian Anderson, the Atlanta Braves’ pitchers combined to two-hit the Houston Astros in a 2-0 win in Game 3 of the World Series on Friday. Atlanta leads the series 2-1.

Anderson was pulled with a no-hitter through five innings, finishing with four strikeouts and three walks on 76 pitches. The Braves didn’t give up their first hit until Aledmys Diaz led off the top of the eighth inning with a bloop single into shallow left field off reliever Tyler Matzek.

Diaz advanced to third on a stolen base and a throwing error by Braves catcher Travis d’Arnaud. But with the tying run on third with two outs, Matzek got Michael Brantley to pop up to end the threat.

Austin Riley hit an RBI double in the third inning, and d’Arnaud added a solo home run in the eighth for the Braves. Game 4 is Saturday in Atlanta.

"One of the things was he’d thrown a lot of pitches to the top half of that lineup,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said about his decision to pull Anderson with the no-hitter. “The fourth inning he really had to work to get through that. He had a really good fifth inning. But I’m just like, 'Ian — I’m going with my gut right here.'"

In a battle of young starters, the 23-year-old Anderson outdueled Houston’s 24-year-old Luis Garcia. The Astros’ rookie went 3 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and walking four while striking out six.

Anderson walked three batters in the first four innings, and allowed consecutive base runners in the fourth with two outs, but escaped with a groundout from Kyle Tucker. Anderson pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning before giving way to the Atlanta bullpen.

"It would have been real easy to let him go out (for the sixth inning)," Snitker said. "Our guys were rested that we like and I just thought at some point … It could have backfired, I guess, but I thought at that point in time in a game of this magnitude, he’d done his job."

Prior to the game, the family of Baseball Hall of Famer and Braves legend Hank Aaron, including his widow Billye, were honored on the field. Aaron died in January at 86.

Game 3 was the first World Series game to be played in Atlanta since 1999. The win gives the Braves their first World Series lead since 1996.
