Well that went badly.
Russell Wilson, known for never getting injured, suffered a bad middle finger dislocation courtesy of Aaron Donald. The Seattle Seahawks (2-3) offense wasted too many 1st half opportunities and the defense was a waste of time in the 2nd half, as the Los Angeles Rams (4-1) came into Lumen Field and came out the winners once again. A 26-17 victory after the Seahawks held a 7-3 halftime lead that should’ve been bigger.
We don’t know the severity of Wilson’s injury but it led to Geno Smith playing the entire 4th quarter, and he was spirited. He led a 98-yard touchdown drive to bring Seattle back into things, but the defense yielded 476 yards of total offense to Matthew Stafford and company and looked out of sorts defending the run and the pass. When they finally did get a critical three-and-out, Geno threw an interception after Tyler Lockett fell down on his route.
Another home loss for the Seahawks and this one may be a turning point in the future of this season and the franchise.
1st Half
The Rams started on offense but could only pick up one 1st down. Matthew Stafford overshot Cooper Kupp on 3rd down and that led to the game’s first punt. The Seahawks’ first offensive possession saw Tyler Lockett gain 26 yards on the opening play, but the drive stalled out on 3rd and 3 and Seattle punted from the Rams’ 43. Luckily it wasn’t a costly move as the defense held firm and forced another punt.
Seattle drove into field goal range in part because of a Wilson scramble to find DK Metcalf for 25 yards. They proceeded to run if four straight times, including on 4th and 2, and Alex Collins was predictably stuffed. Los Angeles drove down the field and got out of a 2nd and 17 hole with a Stafford strike to Robert Woods. Another Woods catch-and-run put them in goal to go, but Quandre Diggs stifled the Rams with a gift interception. I have no idea what Stafford saw and I thought he was trying to throw it away.
Unfortunately, Wilson was picked off near midfield on a throw intended for Tyler Lockett, broken up by Jalen Ramsey, and popped into Troy Reeder’s arms. The Rams did nothing with his and punted right back after a 3-and-out.
We finally saw points on the board courtesy of the Seahawks. A deep ball to Lockett resulted in a very necessary pass interference by Robert Rochell. Two plays later at the Rams’ 19, Wilson fired a post route throw to DK Metcalf who beat Jalen Ramsey for the touchdown. 7-0 Seahawks.
The Rams went on a 14-play drive that featured a lot of running by Sony Michel, who converted a 4th and 1 to extend the possession. On the other side of the two-minute warning, Al Woods blew up a 3rd and short Michel run and McVay settled for a Matt Gay field goal. 7-3 Seahawks.
In the one-minute drill, Russell Wilson found DeeJay Dallas for a 28-yard gain on a wheel route. A poor decision to let so much time run off the clock led to a tight frame for the Seahawks to add more points. After a roughing the passer by Aaron Donald, Wilson threw a touchdown to Tyler Lockett but it was called back due to holding by Duane Brown. Seattle settled for a field goal from 35 yards out, which Jason Myers shanked to the left.
2nd Half
A terrible sack taken by Russell killed off a promising opening drive. A great punt by Michael Dickson backed the Rams up at the 4. An erratic Matthew Stafford was missing open receivers but on 3rd and 10 he launched an underthrown pass to DeSean Jackson, who caught and ran for 68 yards as Jamal Adams horribly misplayed the ball. Darrell Henderson gave the Rams the lead two plays later. 9-7 Rams with the missed PAT.
Things got worse from here as Wilson narrowly missed Tyler Lockett on a near guaranteed touchdown throw. Wilson was injured on his throwing middle finger and Seattle punted. Jamal Adams was beaten for a touchdown by Tyler Higbee on the ensuing possession, then Wilson returned with a three-and-out as things continued to unravel. Michael Dickson had his punt blocked, but he picked it up and then punted it again which apparently wasn’t a penalty. It’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. 16-7 Rams at the end of the 3rd quarter.
The Rams ended up punting, and the Seahawks got the ball back at their own 2-yard line with Geno Smith subbing in for the injured Wilson. Amazingly, Geno did the damn thing. An incredible 98-yard drive in which Smith was 5/5 for 72 yards including Metcalf’s second TD of the game. 16-14 Rams.
You knew the defense wouldn’t hold up, though. A nice and easy 6-play, 74-yard drive by Matthew Stafford in which Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp were left uncovered and unbothered. Sony Michel punched it in from 1 yard out. 23-14 Rams with 6:08 to go.
Matt Gay’s second kickoff out of bounds gave Seattle a short field. Geno again engineered a quality drive into the red zone but it stalled out and they had to settle for a field goal. 23-17 Rams with 2:45 to go.
The Rams got the ball back with 2:39 left and all three timeouts for the Seahawks at their disposal. Immediate first down for Henderson. Timeout Seahawks. No gain so Henderson sets up 2nd and 10. A couple of yards on the next play sets up 3rd and 8. BATTED DOWN BY DUNLAP!
Welp. Geno got picked off. Tyler Lockett fell on his route. Rams kicked the game-ending field goal. 26-17 Rams FINAL.

After the mini-bye week, the Seahawks head on the road to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers (1-3) on Sunday Night Football on Oct. 17 at 5:15 PM PT on NBC.
