USD’s 52-51 win over Cal Poly on Sunday proved costly. Senior guard Jase Townsend, who had been the team’s leading scorer, suffered a broken left hand and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks, according to head coach Sam Scholl.
Redshirt senior guard Joey Calcaterra, the team’s third-leading scorer, crashed to the floor in the first half with a left ankle injury. X-rays were negative but Calcaterra was on crutches and in a walking boot Monday. Calcaterra is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam Tuesday.
There’s no time frame for when Calcaterra, a three-year starter, will return and high ankle sprains can takes weeks to heal.
Calcaterra suffered his injury when he left the floor to make a pass and landed on an opposing player’s foot.
“Initially, I thought I felt something crack and break,” Calcaterra said. “I thought it was pretty serious.”
On a team that has averaged just 49 points the last three games, the loss of Townsend and Calcaterra will be challenging. Townsend is averaging 11.7 points, Calcaterra 9.9.
Freshman Wayne McKinney III played a season-high 30 minutes Sunday and scored a career-high 17 points. He’ll be expected to be in the starting lineup Saturday when USD hosts Cal Lutheran.
The other likely starter will either be sixth-year forward Josh Parrish or sophomore Georgetown transfer guard T.J. Berger. Parrish is averaging 4.9 points, Berger 2.8.
Terrell Brown-Soares, who started the first eight games of the season and is averaging 8 points and a team-leading 8.1 rebounds, has missed the past two games with an elbow infection. Scholl said Brown-Soares needs the pain to subside before he can resume basketball activity.
