HOUSTON – Despite shooting the lights out of the gym in the second half, including shooting 50 percent from three point distance, the HBU women's basketball team dropped a close contest late to the Texas State Bobcats Thursday night in Sharp Gym.
The Huskies (3-5, 0-0 SLC) struggled early in the contest. In the first quarter, the Bobcats (4-2, 0-0 SBC) dominated both sides of the ball, jumping out to a 14-3 lead seven minutes into the game. The Huskies wouldn't let the early Texas State run impact their game, ending the quarter on an 8-2 run of their own, including two jump shots from Kennedy Wilson and a pair of layups and free throws from N'Denasija Collins. The second quarter was a constant back and forth between the two teams and the Bobcats took a 32-22 lead into halftime.
"I am disappointed we came out so flat in the first half," head coach Donna Finnie said post game. "We have been talking about how we have to play hard for 40 minutes and we did not do that tonight."
The Huskies came alive offensively in the second half. After surrendering a pair of buckets to open the third, the Huskies went on an 8-0 run finished off by a huge and-one layup from Collins, cutting the Bobcats lead to just four. Texas State would answer with five layups over their next five possessions. Enya Maguire and Julija Vujakovic ended the quarter with two big Husky three pointers as the Bobcats took a 48-40 lead into the fourth quarter.
Both teams struggled early in the period, as each went scoreless over the first three minutes. Back to back three pointers from Collins and Vujakovic and a layup by Timia Jefferson brought the score back to even for the first time since the opening tip. The Bobcats went to the line with 4:35 left on the clock and knocked down two free throws before Maguire knocked down a corner three for the Huskies to claim their first lead of the contest. The Bobcats would answer with a three of their own. Collins took the Huskies back down the floor and dropped in a contested three to once again claim the lead. The Bobcats would go to the line with three minutes left and knock down one of two free throws to even the score at 54. Both team would go scoreless over the next two and a half minutes.
Tied with 30 seconds left in the game, the Huskies had an opportunity to take the last shot, but the Bobcats were able to steal the inbounds pass and run the length of the floor to make the go ahead layup. The Huskies would send the bobcats to the free throw line one last time with 10 seconds left in the game as Ja'Kayla Bowie knocked down both to ice the game.
"I am proud of our effort in the second half, but we need to bring that energy every single day," Finnie concluded.
Collins led all scorers with 17 points (6-9 FG) and added six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Jefferson had 14 points (6-18 FG) while Maguire had 11 points, shooting 3 of 9 from three points land. Kennedy Wilson and Vujakovic each added six points for the Huskies. Lauryn Thompson led Texas State in scoring with 14 points while Da'Nasia Hood fell just shy of a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Huskies shot 37.1 percent from the floor while the Bobcats shot 38.2 percent from the floor. The Huskies had their best three point shooting game of the young season, shooting just under 37 percent from deep while holding Texas State to just 9.1 percent from deep.
The Huskies hit the road again Monday when they travel to Edinburg to take on UTRGV at 6 p.m. That game will be aired live on ESPN+.
