MIAMI -- Dodgers right-hander Tony Gonsolin was scheduled to start against the Marlins on Monday. Instead, the Dodgers will be without Gonsolin for at least a few weeks as the team placed the All-Star on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain, retroactive to Friday.
It’s unclear how severe the injury is and how Gonsolin sustained it. There should be more clarity once manager Dave Roberts talks to the media at 1:45 p.m. PT on Monday. Right-hander Michael Grove was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City and will now start for the Dodgers in the series finale against Miami.
Gonsolin has been one of the best pitchers in the Majors this season. He leads the National League with 16 wins and a 2.10 ERA. The .169 batting average against Gonsolin is the lowest in the Majors this season. At 128 1/3 innings, however, Gonsolin has blown past his career high in innings pitched during a big league season.
A few days ago, Roberts called Gonsolin “a frontline starter” as the Dodgers prepare for the postseason. Losing Gonsolin for an extended period of time would be another significant loss for the club, which also recently lost Walker Buehler for the season.
In Gonsolin's absence, the Dodgers will continue to lean on Julio UrĂas, Tyler Anderson, Andrew Heaney and Clayton Kershaw, who will likely come off the injured list to start on Thursday against the Mets, though that has not been formally announced.
The Dodgers will also turn to Ryan Pepiot, Andre Jackson and Grove as potential length options in the rotation.
