5 Oregon players with most to gain, lose in fall camp 2022 - OregonLive

EUGENE — Oregon opens fall camp this afternoon and several players have a chance to gain or lose roles to open the season.

A couple of starting jobs are open and several spots on the two-deep are going to be competitive.

Here are 5 Oregon players with the most to gain or lose during fall camp, with an emphasis on potential to see a dramatic move on the depth chart.

Gain: Wide receiver Caleb Chapman

The transfer from Texas A&M has been plagued by injuries but when healthy he can pose a major vertical threat. He can challenge for at least a spot on the two-deep and even see a starter’s volume of reps if he can meet the potential he showed early in his career.

Gain: Defensive backs Trejon Williams, Jalil Tucker, Khamari Terrell

The Ducks are thin in the secondary, especially at cornerback, and the three freshmen who arrived over the summer will have a chance to see early playing time. With only six scholarship cornerbacks and nine scholarship safeties, even if they end up being lower on the depth chart there’s no ruling out being in the rotation.

Gain: Offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr.

The five-star freshman didn’t get to benefit from spring practice and with five returning experienced players essentially locked in to starting roles there is a bit of a ceiling. However, Conerly could still prove worthy of being on the two-deep and getting some opportunities. With the four-game redshirt rule and an FCS game in week 2, not everything has to be framed about being on the field against Georgia.

Lose: Edge defenders Jake Shipley and Jaden Navarrette

Two third-year players who have been lost in the shuffle thus far and competition will only make it more difficult to breakthrough. Shipley saw action early last season when the Ducks were depleted by injuries and was overmatched as a redshirt-freshman. He’s moved from end to interior and back and it’s hard to see a path to the two-deep on the edge. Navarrette has been hampered by injuries and entering his third-year freshman season with a logjam in front of him and newcomers on the edge to challenge for reps too.

Lose: Receiver Josh Delgado

Delgado entered the offseason in a better position to get back into the rotation, but the Ducks added four wide outs. The two deep is basically set, at least in terms of names, and freshmen could shoot past the fourth-year sophomore.

Lose: Safety Steve Stephens IV

Stephens saw the most action of his career as a starter last season until getting hurt against Colorado. Even if he moves from boundary to field, there is significant competition for him to stay in the rotation to the level that he was in 2021.

Lose: Running back Sean Dollars

You hate it for Dollars that injuries have impacted his career as much as they have. When he chose to return to UO rather than transfer, Oregon had two running backs. Now there are five. Dollars could still end up being the No. 2 back, but he could also be No. 4 and the difference in those roles combined with him entering his fourth-year sophomore season is why we’ve got him in this group.
