Matt Manning was struck by a line drive and left the game after just one inning, forcing the Detroit Tigers to use five relievers in a 4-3 loss to the New York Yankees on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees (70-69) have won the first two games of the three-game series against the Tigers (63-76).
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said after the game that Manning had a fracture in his right foot and would be out for the rest of the season.
Manning was struck by a 119 mph liner off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton. He recovered to throw to first base and end the inning but was in clear pain.
The play in which he was hit was reminiscent of a play on April 11 in Toronto when Manning was struck by a ball and fractured a toe. He ended up spending 10 weeks on the injured list.
“It’s the same foot, different spot,” Hinch said. “I feel for him, because he’s he worked hard to get back and he was throwing the ball very well.
“You can count probably on one hand how many pitchers have gotten hit in the foot with line drives this season. He’s had it twice. That’s incredibly unlucky.”
Reliever Beau Brieske replaced Manning and gave up three runs in the second and third innings, including a solo homer by Yankees rookie Jasson Dominguez, his first at Yankee Stadium.
Zach McKinstry doubled and scored in the first inning, but Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt then went on to retire 16 straight batters. The Tigers broke through for two runs in the seventh and threatened to score in the eighth, but their rally fell short.
Up next: The Tigers and Yankees wrap up their three-game series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Tigers left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (10-7, 3.11 ERA) will face Yankees lefty Carlos Rodon (2-4, 5.70).
Rodriguez allowed just run in 6 2/3 inning in his last start in Chicago against the White Sox on Sept. 1.
After starting August with two bad starts, Rodon has posted a 2.87 ERA over his last three starts.
This will be his 12th career start against the Tigers and his first as a member of the Yankees. Rodon is 6-2 with a 4.75 ERA against Detroit. In his last five starts against the Tigers, he’s struck out 41 batters and walked just five over 29 innings.
