A 5.8 magnitude earthquake followed by several aftershocks Wednesday morning rattled the Eastern Sierra, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or destroyed structures, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The earthquake occurred about 11 miles southeast of Lone Pine (Inyo County), east of Sequoia National Park, according to the USGS. The temblor had a depth of about 4.7 kilometers.
Nearly 10,000 people reported feeling the shake as of 11:30 a.m., but few were affected due to the remote location of the epicenter.
Fifteen earthquakes occurred in the area from 10:11 a.m. to just before noon, including a 4.6-magnitude quake recorded at 10:59 a.m., according to the USGS.
The quakes were the latest in recent days to strike California. A pair of small earthquakes struck the East Bay near Berkeley two weeks ago and another occurred earlier this month near Searles Valley.
Gov. Gavin Newsom, who had a 11 a.m. news conference pre-scheduled to discuss the coronavirus outbreak, said the temblor served as a reminder “of our responsibilities as Californians, our vulnerabilities as Californians as it relates to the issue of earthquakes.”
“If we didn’t need to be reminded, Mother Nature made sure we were reminded of her fury,” Newsom said, noting that almost a year ago to the day a major earthquake hit Ridgecrest (Kern County).
Officials expected few or no areas to be affected by landslides or liquefaction.
Inyo County officials posted a link on Facebook to an earthquake preparation page. A county spokeswoman could not be immediately reached for comment.
“With most folks in Inyo County (especially near and around the Lone Pine area) feeling that last shaker — it seems like a good time to share some earthquake safety tips!” officials wrote in the post.
