As the Green Bay Packers get ready for the 2020 season there is a big problem hanging over the league, COVID-19. As much as everyone would hope the pandemic would go away, it isn’t going to happen, and it will affect the NFL over the course of the entire season.
Players across the league are probably going to test positive and miss games, but there are some players the Packers can’t afford to lose. Of course, the Packers can’t afford to lose quarterback Aaron Rodgers or running back Aaron Jones, but those are two obvious choices.
Let’s take a look at the three other players the Packers can’t afford to lose for any portion of the 2020 season.
Allen Lazard
The Packers had an opportunity to improve their wide receiver room this offseason, but they brought in Devin Funchess and no one else. Davante Adams is still the team’s best at the position, but the one wide receiver they can’t afford to lose is Allen Lazard.
Lazard was an undrafted free agent in 2018, but he looks like he could become the Packers’ best wideout in short order. During the 2019 season, he caught 35 passes for 477 yards and three touchdowns. If Lazard goes down, the Packers’ depth will be in serious trouble.
Darnell Savage
Darnell Savage looks like he is ready to take an even bigger step forward during the 2020 season after a strong 2019. The safety position wasn’t great for the Packers the year before, but Savage helped to turn things around. During the 2019 season, he was a leader of the defense, finishing the year with two interceptions, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.
If Savage does down with COVID-19 or injury, the Packers defense is going to be in a lot of trouble.
Kenny Clark
Everyone loves to talk about Za’Darius Smith as the face of the Packers defense, but Kenny Clark is the player the Packers can’t afford to lose. Clark is often overlooked but he has been a standout since being selected in the first round of the 2016 draft. Clark has had 146 total pressures and 116 run stops since coming into the league.
Clark is an every-down player who consistently reaches the backfield. Getting after the quarterback without blitzing can be a big advantage for any defense. With Clark, the Green Bay is able to do that. Losing him would be a big blow to the defensive front.
