  • Last month was the second-warmest and fourth-driest May on record in Duluth, according to the National Weather Service. The average temperature was 54.9 degrees, 5.5 degrees above normal, and precipitation was just 0.82 inch, which is 2.59 inches below normal.
  • Frank Befera, president and general manager of television stations WDIO and WIRT, has announced that Ed Smith, an employee of the stations since 1977, will succeed Dennis Anderson as news director. Anderson plans to leave to join the staff of Johnson Mortuary.

  • ME International of Duluth and Steelworkers Local 1028 reached a tentative contract agreement early last evening after a nine-month strike that turned into a lockout. The strike began Aug. 25, 1999, when 143 workers walked off the job after labor contract negotiations broke down.
  • Field Logic Inc., a St. Paul sporting goods manufacturer, will move to Superior by next spring, creating 30 jobs that will pay about $30,000 annually. The company will purchase land in the Connors Point Industrial Park and will manufacture archery targets and deer scents.
