Editor’s note: The Orange County Register is having the area’s spring sports coaches take part in a Q&A about the 2020 season that was cut short by the coronavirus crisis.
Steve Lalim, Laguna Beach girls track and field
Q: How are you adapting to being home every day during the spring?
A: I have a lot of extra time and energy, so it’s allowed me to get out and run every day, and spend more quality time with my family.
Q: As a coach, what do you miss most about your “normal routine” (pre-coronavirus)?
A: I miss the day-to-day interactions with the athletes. I miss timing workouts, I miss the routine, I miss the structure. I miss hanging out with the other coaches. I miss Saturday morning long runs and the team breakfast afterwards.
Q: When you think about your team these days, what stands out the most?
A: How our team is such a great, hard-working group of kids.
Q: As a coach, what has been the worst moment for you this spring and why?
A: When the season was cancelled. We were off to a great start, and I was expecting some big results. It was sad to lose what would have been a great season.
Q: And what has been the best moment for you this spring and why?
A: When the girls distance team did a Zoom call with the Newbury Park team. They were super excited about it.
Q: If you could have a track meet tomorrow, what would that look like?
A: Home meet against anyone. But I’d be happy to race anywhere.
Q: What do you want your players to learn from all of this?
A: Not to take anything for granted.
Q: For fun, who on your team would you like to challenge to a friendly showdown? Would it be a race, a field event, or perhaps a dance-off on the track?
A: Not a dance-off. I’m a horrible dancer.
Q: For fun, what song do you play on the team bus for the final bus ride home?
A: “You’re the Best” — Karate Kid soundtrack.
