Massive Twitter hack: Unverified users celebrate as verified accounts lose ability to tweet - NJ.com

After a major Twitter hack compromised a series of high-profile Twitter accounts with large followings — from former President Barack Obama to Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, former Vice President Joe Biden, Kim Kardashian and Elon Musk — “unverified” Twitter rejoiced.

The accounts were targeted as part of a bitcoin scam, according to the Associated Press and multiple outlets. Tweets sent from these accounts offered to pay $2,000 for every $1,000 sent to a bitcoin address.

In order to address the hack, which began affecting these verified accounts and others Wednesday afternoon, Twitter made it so that all verified accounts could no longer post new tweets.

Verified Twitter accounts, designated by blue check marks, could retweet posts including their own, but that’s about it. Otherwise, any celebrity, company (including Apple and Uber), public figure, journalist or other checked account was pretty much rendered voiceless.

“We’re continuing to limit the ability to Tweet, reset your password, and some other account functionalities while we look into this,” the Twitter Support account tweeted Wednesday night. “Thanks for your patience.”

Verified accounts had their powers restored sometime around 8:30 p.m. ET, but the change was fun while it lasted.

“Tough day for us at Twitter,” Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted later Wednesday night. “We all feel terrible this happened. We’re diagnosing and will share everything we can when we have a more complete understanding of exactly what happened.”

During the temporary verified ban, those who have unverified accounts riffed on their newfound status at the top of the Twitter heap. Those who could tweet duly mocked others’ limited accounts.

Suddenly, blue check marks were so July 14.

Unverified users boasted of a new “autonomous zone,” a place where everyone unrestrained by such approval could run riot, or at least be heard over the lack of more “prominent” voices.

Glorious chaos reigned supreme. In place of the actual AP Stylebook, a parody account popped up to take advantage of the situation.

“LIBERATE THE OXFORD COMMA!” tweeted Temporary AP Stylebook. “¡VIVA LA REVOLUCIÓN!”

“The word “moist” is no longer compatible with AP Style guidelines.”

It was “when the cat’s away, the mice will play” for the pandemic era — also known as a party, and no blue check marks were invited.
