PITTSBURGH – Pitt took a lead into the first quarter break, but couldn't stop the Syracuse momentum the rest of the way as the No. 4 Orange defeated the Panthers 18-6 Saturday at the Carrier Dome. Paige Petty (1G, 1A) and Kierin Ratliff-Kailbourne (2G) each recorded two points to lead the Panthers offensively.
Syracuse, the 2021 NCAA runner up, was led by Meaghan Tyrrell (6G, 2A) and Emily Hawryschuk (4G, 2A).
After falling behind 1-0, Pitt scored four of the remaining five goals in the first quarter to take a 4-2 lead into the break. Carlie Leach netted the first for the Panthers less than five minutes into the game after the first of six by Meaghan Tyrrell. Ratliff-Kailbourne scored her two of the game in the opening frame, the first off a perfect feed from Madisyn Kittell and the second with a great left to right cut before firing into the back of the net.
Petty extended her consecutive games with a point streak to 74 off of a free position shot and goal with just over four minutes left in quarter number one.
Syracuse scored all five goals of the second quarter with two by Meaghan Tyrrell, two by Emma Tyrrell, and one by Hawryschuk. Pitt goalie, Paulina DiFatta, stopped three Syracuse shots in the quarter to keep the score close at halftime: 7-4 in favor of the Orange.
The Syracuse momentum continued in the second half, as they scored seven more goals to the Panthers two in the third. Ava Washington did get into the scorebook for Pitt after a great fake to the left and cut to the right to get by her defender before scoring her lone goal of the game. Chloe Jones scored her ninth of the season after receiving a nice pass from Petty and backing her defender down to get in shooting position in front of the goalie. Five Syracuse players scored in the third quarter to put the Orange firmly in the lead, 14-6.
The fourth quarter saw more of the same with Syracuse outscoring the Panthers 4-0.
DiFatta recorded 8 saves and grabbed two ground balls in the game. Freshman Jill Fenech grabbed 6 draw controls helping the Panthers win the first half draw control battle, 8-4.
Pitt is now 6-7 on the season, including a 0-6 mark in ACC play. The Panthers have dropped four games to top-10 opponents and a pair of one-goal defeats in conference action. Boston College improved to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the ACC.
